How to Network like a Good Human

It’s come to my attention that some people really dislike networking. Well… ok, this isn’t quite true. I’ve known this fact for a while, so it’s not a new realization. When someone tells me they think networking is a waste of time, I am certain of one thing: we don’t have the same definitions of what “networking” can mean. It’s clear to me that we need a new definition, one that does away with the awkward, self-serving, neediness that stereotypical networking events allow.

So here’s what we’ve got:

Networking is the process of making connections and building relationships that work in reciprocity to provide you with advice and referral contacts. Networking for #GoodHumans focuses on learning, generosity, and love for the purpose of business development, relationship development, and personal development.

Let’s break down some terms in the definition.

  • Reciprocity is the practice of exchange for mutual benefit. Nothing one-sided or selfish here! 

  • Much research shows referrals are the best way to find your next client. Also, as our groups get to know and trust each other, we find that referrals are often given for other service providers like counselors or contractors.

  • When we focus on learning, we’re curious. We ask good questions and we listen for the answers. We love to re-work our processes and get better at serving our clients and fellow members.

  • When we’re generous, we think broadly about what we give. We are clear about the value we bring and know there is plenty of work for everyone so we’re not fearful of friendships with competitors.

  • We believe that intimate conversations are more valuable than small talk. Let’s avoid questions like “What do you do?” and instead ask, “What is your favorite part of your work?” We dig deep and yes, even love one another.
